The Garden - Horsesh*t on Route 66 REVIEW

7.0/10

The twin brother duo of Wyatt and Fletcher Shears are back with another album: 'Horsesh*t on Route 66'. It's odd to say but the album's title sounds exactly how it sounds. "Haunted House on Zillow" is a hilarious and quirky opening to the album, with a spooky sample of I assume a ghost hunter, in the beginning, talking about her beliefs in a haunted house.

"Puerta de Limosina" is by far the most chaotic and loud track on the record (which is Garden's signature sound in my opinion), and it's just wonderful. It starts off with sharp over-clarified drums and tapers off into small breaks only to hit you once again with those drums. This song is only 1:18, however, transitioning incredibly smoothly into one of my personal favorites on the project, "Freight Yard". This track is definitely one of the softer and cozier listens on the album, with a mellow electric guitar in the background and softer vocals from the brothers, with a wonderful transition into a faster-paced guitar in parts of the track.

The catchiest song on the project for me was definitely "Chainsaw the Door". The lyrics to this are wonderful:

"When I see that closed door, I'm gonna chainsaw through it"

"A family that you don't like

A fuckin slug on a motorbike

A dark old memory"

This track is what I imagine The Garden to be. Fun, weird, quirky, and just carefree.

This new Garden album is in fact one of the most solid projects yet. However, this album did seem to be lacking a specific direction and consistency throughout. With time, however, I believe The Garden will be the top experimental rock band in no time.
