DUCKBOY - tragic love songs to study to [vol. 5] REVIEW

5.0/10

DUCKBOY, also known as Ruby da Cherry from hardcore hip hop duo $uicideboy$, has released his first solo project 'tragic love songs to study to'. I was surprised by a textbook pop-punk sound when I was expecting a similar sound to his hardcore hip-hop self on $uicideboy$.

My main issue with this project is that it doesn't have much to offer up. It's cluttered with interludes that would improve the project if they were replaced with actual songs. When songs do actually play, it's nothing incredibly stunning--"ROUGAROU" has classic punk-sounding vocals and pretty gnarly guitar moments, "after further reasoning, i’m going to bed" offers up a fast-paced instrumental and a solid refrain along with a catchy melody, but unfortunately is vocally one-dimensional. "XXL hadron collider" is the most stand-out moment to me with its hard-hitting drums combined with an energetic head-bang-inducing electric guitar.

Overall, DUCKBOY comes through with one-dimensional vocals across the project and a generally careless feel in terms of track placement. However, the vision is there, and I see the potential!
