Rozi Plain - Prize REVIEW

7.7/10

London-based Indie artist Rozi Plain enters 2023 with a warm and cozy project.

The album opens with the rich yet delicate "Agreeing For Two", featuring English jazz musician Alabaster DePlume, who is present on several other tracks on this project. Containing lovely layered vocals, easy-going acoustic guitar strings, and light synths, it makes for a satisfyingly easy-on-the-ear listen. Following "Agreeing For Two" comes "Complicated", a four-minute ballad with inviting vocals from Rozi and ideally buried keys a synth that rings in your right ear. "Help" is one of the more uniquely produced tracks on the album, and although it may be lyrically stripped back, the hypnotic synths and airy horns make this track an addictive listen. "Prove Your Good" is a similar track, with fun synths and solid vocals from Rozi.

"Conversation" was one of the first tracks I wasn't too fond of, as the length makes for an awkward and unfinished listening experience. This period of underwhelm is quickly revived on the following track, "Painted the Room". The vocal production picks up considerably on this track, and the variety of synths makes for an entertaining listen. The synth break at around a minute thirty is done and placed perfectly. "Sore" is another short track, and is far better than "Conversation", offering up luscious strings and an all-around more rounded sound. "Spot Thirteen" shortly follows, and although it is a bit slow-paced, it comes through with layered vocals and strings to perfectly match. "Standing Up" is another slow-paced bop, but fails to reach the expectation that "Spot Thirteen" set. Besides that, it still offers solid synths and vocals from Rozi.

The closing track, "Blink", again comes through with addictive synths, and warm vocals from Rozi, but doesn't hit that peak that the previous tracks did. Besides that, it's a calm and fine closer to the project.

This was my first listening experience with Rozi Plain, and it for sure won't be my last.
