Polaris prize-winning Zambian-Canadian rapper Backxwash known for her aggressive rapping style and grimy production is back with another project.
The album has a strong start with the horrorcore track "VIBRANDA". Backxwash comes in with her classic aggressive, almost angry delivery. The track "NYAMA" edges screamo, with Backxwash surprising me with screaming to open the track, which sounds more like screeching; it's pretty off-putting screaming. Her flow, however, is solid on this track and the production makes you want to punch holes in your wall (this is a good thing). "MUZUNGU" is a head-thrashing-bopping-tapping-bobbing-track with a red hot metal-esk beat to match Backxwash's vocals.
I'm fairly fond of the closing track "MUKAZI". Sure, it may not fit the overall theme of the album that's presented by the previous tracks, but Backxwash shows that she's not just an angry rapper who can only rap over aggressive hard-hitting beats. "MUKAZI" has gorgeous production and melodic vocals that are a calm and peaceful closer to an album that is so chaotic it can cause you to have trouble breathing at some points.
Despite some tracks not fully sticking with me, this album is a solid piece of work with addicting tracks worth replaying over and over again.
